Hopefully there is a space opening for that creativity and spirituality you're talking about. What kind/genre of music do you write?Michelle (Balancing Jane)http://www.balancingjane.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5827968588643415787.post-32034716462524109732013-04-13T19:34:07.774-05:002013-04-13T19:34:07.774-05:00I dunno, Melanie Fiona's stuff just sounds lik...I dunno, Melanie Fiona's stuff just sounds like boilerplate R&B to me, designed much more to show off her amazing virtuoso voice than to express significant emotion. As for the whole idea that she "should" be singing about how great her life is now that she's left the jerk--well, there are plenty of songs like that too, and I guess it's better for "young impressionable girls", but when that's presented as the only feminist thing one can sing, it really does start to feel like the party line correct answer to relationships, and a denial of the experiences of people who can't just magically stop caring about the people who do them wrong. But that advice writer Shanel Cooper...retch. Right, like all women are "empowered" by being silent housewives. Personally, I'd like to see more music that emphasizes women's creativity and spirituality, like Florence and the Machine's "Breath of Life". Especially being a songwriter myself--wanting one specific man because he makes the music play in your head makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than changing your entire self in order to get "a man."Pissed Off Womanhttp://pissedoffwoman.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5827968588643415787.post-89819093439179822912013-04-13T08:09:53.401-05:002013-04-13T08:09:53.401-05:00The song sounds amazing. I wonder if she had pressure from the industry to make it more "interesting" by making it a decision to stay?Michelle (Balancing Jane)http://www.balancingjane.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5827968588643415787.post-39148188698259635332013-04-13T05:07:04.003-05:002013-04-13T05:07:04.003-05:00@Jane

I wanted her to sing, "I got the hell away from him and started to live my life again," or something like that, instead of just having it be this "I'm in love with a cheating jerk, so I must suffer" BS. That is so out-of-date and tired, and NOT the kind of thing young impressionable girls especially need to be hearing. What's interesting is that Melanie Fiona herself said that the tune is based on finding an actual significant other cheating on her---she left him, so I don't know why she couldn't have put that into the song---it would have made an already great song even greater.Michelle Kirkwoodhttp://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000709864513noreply@blogger.com
